Anchors aweigh!

Ahoy!

Yesterday, I was in Long Beach for the Little Ships Fleet Yacht Club Opening Day Ceremony. Though I was there to sing for the ceremony, I made several new friends and was quickly welcomed aboard for a parade around the bay! Commodore Jimbo of the LSFYC snapped this shot as we were leaving the dock. I’m reminded I always meant to learn how to sail….

Pinocchio's for Pi Day! (3/14, 7-10pm)

The Conspirators and I will be back at Pinocchio’s in Pasadena this Pi Day! (That’s next Saturday, 3/14, for those of you not quite geeky enough to observe the holiday.)  We’ll be playing from 7-10pm, which is prime dinner time, and, I’m reminded, everyone’s gotta eat!

There’s no cover charge and all ages are welcome.  Jim, Laurence, Daniel, Mike, and I would love to see you there!

Pinocchio’s is at:
1449 N Lake Ave
Pasadena, CA 91104
(If you want a reservation, call them at (626) 791-7591 and they’ll be happy to make sure you have a seat!)

Don’t forget, you can keep up with our shows on the gig calendar or you can join my mailing list!

Beckman Auditorium was packed!

What a concert on Friday night!Me and Flea! I’ve never seen Beckman Auditorium so full!  A big thank you to all who came!  For those who couldn’t be there, I posted recordings of my tunes on the Recordings page.

It was a real thrill to get to meet Flea — what a delightful man and an inspiring musician.  It was especially neat to hear him talk about music education, the role it played in his life, and helping found the Silverlake Conservatory.

Back at Pinocchio's with the Conspirators on 1/31!

On Saturday, 1/31, “The Conspirators” and I will be back at Pinocchio’s in Pasadena, swinging the joint from 8-11pm.  It’ll be a fun evening of jazz standards, swing, and blues.

There’s no cover charge and all ages are welcome.  Just show up, eat good Italian food or hang out at the bar, and, as always, snap with me when I sing “Fever.”

My partners in crime? The Conspirators are Jim Van Deventer on tenor sax, Laurence Yeung on guitar, Daniel Hurtado on bass, and Mike Ferrara on drums.

Me, Flea and cookies: what a deal!

I’m honored to be singing with the Caltech Jazz Bands again at their annual winter showcase.  If “Basin Street Blues” and a brand-spankin’-new Les Deutsch arrangement of “Christmas Night in Harlem” aren’t enough to tempt you, how about this: I’ll be sharing the stage with none other than Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers!  (Bill Bing brings in the coolest guest soloists!)

The concert is Friday, January 23 at 8pm in Beckman Auditorium on the Caltech Campus.  Beckman Auditorium is building 91 on these maps: http://www.caltech.edu/map/.  No tickets are required, and there are usually free cookies, too.

Carols coming out of my ears!

Because I start rehearsing for holiday shows in September, I’m a bit immune to carols and holiday songs. When the decorations come out around town, I know my calendar is about to get especially crowded, but it doesn’t really feel like Christmas until I have caroled my heart out in various costumes for several days in a row. Tonight is the first of the annual Athenaeum Holiday Gala Dinners, where I’ll be performing with the Caltech Chamber Singers and various small caroling groups throughout the weekend — that should get the job done! By this Sunday, I’ll be itching to put up a Christmas tree!

Glee Clubs' annual Holiday Concerts

The Caltech Glee Clubs‘ annual Holiday Concerts are this Friday and Saturday at 8PM and will feature John Rutter’s “Gloria” for chorus, brass, percussion, and organ and other traditional works of the season.

The venue is the beautiful sanctuary at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena.

Check the gig calendar for details and directions!

Pinocchio's this Saturday!

Tired of the old one-song-here, a-coupla-songs-there guest soloist deal, but amidst this whole economic crisis not feeling flush enough to have my band throw you your own concert in your living room?  Have I got a deal for you!  This Saturday, 11/1, we’ll be performing from 8-11pm at Pinocchio’s in Pasadena — it’s my new band’s first show.  “The Conspirators” and I need you to come and cheer us on!

It’ll be a fun evening of jazz standards, swing, and blues.  Come for the music and stay for the lasagna … or vice-versa!

There’s no cover charge and all ages are welcome (not to worry, there’s still a full bar).  Just show up, eat good Italian food, drink until you’re merry, and snap with me when I sing “Fever.”

Adventures, check.

I’m back from a series of adventures.

Burning Man was, of course, awesome.  There was dust, there was fire, there was geekery, there were nicknames, there was fire, there was art, there was music … and did I mention there was fire?  Among other things, I learned how to change the alternator in the head of a Mayan god, how to set up, fire, refuel, and teach others to use gasoline flamethrowers, and that a lab coat is a pretty good way to keep the sun off my all-too-Swedish skin.

I have an audio recording of the Black Rock Swing Orchestra’s inaugural show; swing dancers packed the circus tent in the Red Nose District!  I hope to post a few clips soon, but I need to shake the playa dust out of the tunes!

After all that time in the desert, I did some whitewater rafting to rehydrate this weekend.  The gig Saturday night was a capella around a campfire, but that’s as fun a venue as any!  No monitor, though….

The photos are by Dr. Fabio of the Mind Shaft Society.

All systems go!

Last minute preparations for setting up our “Princess Palace” are almost done, and my buddy Kirsten and I will head for Burning Man in the morning.

I’ll be singing with the Black Rock City Swing Orchestra in the bigtop in the Red Nose District next Friday night, so if you’ll be in Black Rock City, come check us out!
